Adherence to an evidence based custom-made footwear design protocol in daily practice and the association to peak plantar pressure in people with diabetes and at high risk of ulceration.

International guidelines recommend the use of adequate orthopaedic footwear to reduce plantar peak pressures (<200kPa) and thereby prevent plantar diabetic foot ulcer recurrence. Despite available scientific evidence for footwear design features on pressure-relief, it remains unclear if these are used in daily practice. An evidence based design protocol to support footwear prescription was developed to facilitate adequate footwear design and improve pressure reduction. The aim was to assess adherence to the design protocol in daily practice and the association to in-shoe peak pressures at high-risk regions for plantar ulceration.
