Human-in-the-loop optimization (HILO) of rocker shoe to reduce plantar pressure and collision work simultaneously

Besides the advantage of offloading pressure, rocker shoe might have disadvantages, e.g.: higher step-to-step collision work. Finding optimal rocker shoe settings might be challenging as individual’s response to the same intervention may vary and may change over time as they adapt to the rocker shoe. With HILO, the adaptation of each individual is included in the optimization loop of the rocker settings. Our approach found individualized solution which performed similarly to generic optimal settings for most participants but is superior in selected cases. In addition, larger apex angle can further offload peak pressure in medial forefoot. Finally, there is limited room for improvement in collision work while effectively offloading medial forefoot compared to generic optimal setting
